Dr. Douglas Klein has been practicing the art of dentistry for over 20 years, and along with a commitment to the patients of his dental practice in Grandville, Michigan, he also has a dedication to constantly improving his craft.
That involves being a part of elite organizations, like the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), which “provides its more than 40,000 members with the resources, support, and inspiration they need to deliver the best dental care and oral health education to the public.”
AGD President Dr. Gajjar, DDS, MAGD, took the time to talk to Klein Dentistry about what the organization is about and why you should choose an AGD dentist like Dr. Klein.
Why Should Patients Care that a Dentist is Involved in AGD?
Patients can be assured that general dentists who are members of the Academy of General Dentistry are among the most highly trained dentists in the world. The AGD works very diligently to advance the careers of our members by offering them ongoing resources and quality continuing education courses that enhances their skills not only in the area of general dentistry, but in all areas of oral health.
Through our dental education and advocacy efforts, we work to make sure legislative and policy decisions are being made to protect their health. In addition, we advocate for legislation that will address access to care issues, removing barriers to receive proper oral health treatments.
What Sets AGD Dentists Apart from the Rest?
AGD members are distinguished by their commitment to continuing education. There are two very rigorous programs – Mastership (MAGD) and the Fellowship (FAGD). The AGD dentists who participate in these programs receive additional training beyond what is required by individual state licensure requirements.
Based on study results conducted by the AGD of its membership, those members who received their MAGD or FAGD have demonstrated that they excelled in a broad range of oral health care competency.
Similarly, even AGD members who have yet to achieve the distinguished Masters and Fellowship awards must maintain membership eligibility by enrolling in additional training, usually exceeding state requirements, also.
Is There Anything Else Patients Should Know About AGD?
General dentists are the gatekeepers to oral health. Patients seeking dental work should first see a general dentist to diagnose and determine treatment options. General dentists are trained to recognize oral health conditions, conduct various in-clinic screenings and work with specialists and other medical professionals, if needed, to develop a comprehensive treatment plan. Through examinations of the condition of a patient’s teeth, gums and other abnormalities, an AGD member is the best choice to offer patient solutions.
